Preprints are officially recognised as "non-prior publications" by major journals. Anti-plagiarism software (like iThenticate) is designed to recognise these servers; by disclosing the preprint DOI in your future journal cover letter, editors will exclude it from similarity checks. This allows you to share your results now and publish an extended version in a top journal later. Once your final journal paper is out, Google Scholar and Crossref work to merge the citations from the preprint and the final paper, maximising your total impact.
